Your Nose Can Tell You When You Need to Visit the Auto Shop

Most cars start out with that nice ‘new’ smell, but there are specific other odors that you should never ignore. Knowing what they are can help you be car-savvy and avoid the expense and hassle of an unexpected breakdown. So, here’s the ‘sniff test’ to help you identify any strange smells, all of which are signs that you need to get to an auto shop fast. Never ignore a peculiar odor!
- Burning Rubber could be drive belts slipping or loose hoses rubbing against the pulleys. If the engine compartment is hot, do not reach inside.
- Hot Oil can indicate that oil is leaking onto the exhaust. To verify this, look for smoke coming from the engine area or oil on the pavement.
- Gasoline – The smell of fuel could result in a fire, so have your vehicle checked out immediately at an auto shop.
- Sweet, Syrupy Smell may be a sign that your vehicle is leaking coolant from somewhere in the cooling system. If the radiator cap is hot, do not open it.
- Burning Carpet Smell may indicate brake problems and poses a potential safety hazard.
- Rotten Egg Smell is never good – if you smell it coming from your car, get to an auto shop ASAP.
