You Can Be Sure That a Reputable Auto Shop Is Not a “Chop Shop”

Every 40 seconds, a vehicle is stolen in the United States – that’s around 800,000 vehicles a year. In 2009, 258 of every 100,000 vehicles were stolen (Insurance Information Institute). In the late 1970s, “chop shops” made their appearance.

You may have heard the term “chop shop,” but do you really know what goes on in these dubious hideouts? Thieves steal vehicles and they’re dropped off at illegal garages (chop shops), where mechanics disassemble the parts and sell them. All identification data is removed from the bodies of the vehicles – making them untraceable.

Despite law-enforcement efforts, chop shops are still thriving. In the US, only a very small percentage of stolen vehicle cases are closed each year. The only way you can you be 100% sure that you’re buying legitimate auto parts is to deal with a reputable auto shop.

It’s a bad choice to attempt to save money by purchasing parts that are not OE (original equipment). A good auto shop only stocks quality vehicle parts bought from manufacturers, and most come with guarantees.

Finding an auto shop with a good reputation can be difficult. Ask family and friends who they recommend. You can also look for shops with good reviews on reputable websites. You’ll want to find one that provides excellent service and affordable prices. Visit the recommended auto shops and ask a few questions about various vehicle parts.

Observe how professional and knowledgeable the staff are, and how neatly the parts are stored. Scan the walls for certificates of excellence. These are good ways to find out just how seriously they take their business.
