When it’s Time to Replace Your Air Filters

The air filters for your car aren’t really for you– they’re put in place for your engine. Your car’s air filter regulates the air that passes through to the engine, blocking out any harmful contamination and only allowing the clean air to be used for the combustion chamber. A dirty air filter becomes clogged and prevent air from getting to the engine, which can have negative side effects for your vehicle’s performance.

How do you know when it’s time to get a new air filter? There are a couple of things to watch for, some subtle and others more obvious. One of the more obvious ways to know is to check the air filters. New, clean air filters are supposed to be white, so if you’re seeing that the filter has changed to gray or brown because of the dirt and debris, then you’re going to need a new air filter.

Another sign can manifest when trying to start your car. The emission control system can be affected if the engine isn’t getting the air it needs. The spark plugs are then more likely to not spark the way they’re supposed to, and you might experience ignition problems. You also could find that you’re not getting the same gas mileage that you used to, which is something that is also affected by the engine’s performance. The bottom line is that the engine will have to work harder if it’s getting less air, thus affecting many parts and systems of your car.
