You’ve all been into an auto shop to get an oil change, and the mechanics take the time to explain that your air filter probably needs to be changed and the manufacturer suggests doing this or that to your vehicle at this mileage, and you shrug it off, saying you’ll get it all done next time without really meaning it. But then the mechanic proceeds to explain to you why it might be a good idea to get the premium oil in your car over the regular standard oil, and you are probably wondering why it matters. Is this a ploy to get your to pay more for your oil change, or will it really make a difference to your car’s performance?
Premium oil is also often referred to as synthetic oil, and many people will tell you it is better for your car. It is made to last longer between oil changes, is thinner, and is more capable of resisting extremes in temperature changes. This also makes it better for cars that often have to start in very cold weather.
However, because the premium oil is more expensive, in the end, you will probably pay the same whether you get more frequent oil changes with the regular oil (or conventional motor oil), or the less frequent oil changes with the premium or synthetic oil. So if you are worried about money, it doesn’t matter which oil you choose, assuming you are punctual about getting oil changes. But if you want the car to last longer and start better in cold weather, most mechanics would recommend the premium oil to allow more time between oil changes and a better oil flow through your car. Some cars even require synthetic oil to be used.
So determine your needs, your vehicle’s needs, and your oil change schedule, and then decide what’s going to work best for you.
