When to Get New Tires and Brakes [infographic]

Tires

• Check the tread on your tires: There is an old trick in which you insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head down. If part of his head is covered by the tread, you’re ok. If it’s all visible, it’s probably time to start tire shopping. As a general rule, you should have a 1/16 inch tread at the least. If you drive in the rain a lot, it should be a 1/8 inch tread.
• Check the outer surface of the tire: As the tire weakens, it will sometimes bulge or blister, which could lead to a blowout. If you notice your tire is deformed or has large lumps, look into changing them. Also check the edge of the tire for wires poking through or baldness in areas.
• Check the feel of your tires when driving: If they are sliding, skidding, or vibrating more than usual, it’s a good indication that they are wearing down to the point of needing new ones. If you receive a car tuneup regularly, the auto shop will usually let you know if the tires are getting close to needing a change.
• Ask the Experts: When in doubt, take your car to a tire store and have them help you check your tires.

Brakes

• Check the Pads: Just like tires, you need to look for damage and depth on your brake pads. Brake pads should be at least ¼ inch thick. If you see less than ¼ in pads, it’s time to get them checked or replaced.
• Listen to the Brakes: A very noticeable way to tell if your brakes need replacement is to listen to them as you drive. If you hear a high pitched squeal when using the brakes, that is a huge red flag. Sometimes this noise is due to dirt build up, but it is always a good idea to get them inspected if you hear suspicious noises.
• Feel the Brakes While Driving: When you brake for a light or a stop sign, feel how your brakes work. If they pull to one side, it means your breaks are wearing down unevenly and should be checked. If you have to press the pedal all the way to the floor to get your car to stop, then it’s time for a brake replacement. And if the car vibrates while braking or the brakes grind, have them checked immediately.
