One of the most dreaded diagnoses to hear from your mechanic has to do with the timing belt – either that it needs to be replaced, or worse that it has broken. If you are told that, because of the mileage on your car, it is time to have the timing belt replaced, you probably should do so pretty soon. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend they be changed between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. The danger of a broken timing belt depends on the type of engine your vehicle has, however, so don’t be afraid to ask your mechanic which it is.
Interference engines are an efficient engine design, but unfortunately when timing belts break or jump a notch on these engines, the piston kicks the valves, and now your vehicle needs a valve job, as well, and perhaps even more work. If your vehicle has a non-interference engine, then the worst that will happen is you will be left stranded and need a tow when it breaks.
Not all vehicles have timing belts. Some have timing chains, which, as the name would suggest, are made of chain instead of rubber. Timing chains generally last far longer than timing belts. In fact, some car manufacturers claim the chain is good for the life of your vehicle. The bad thing about timing chains is that if they do break, they generally cause all kinds of damage to other engine components, although they can just slip off and cause no other damage at all.
If you think yours may have broken, do not start the vehicle, as that can cause more damage. At Country Town Tire & Auto Service Center, we can let you know if you have a timing belt or timing chain and whether you have an interference engine or non-interference engine. We will recommend when it should be replaced and handle the work for you. It doesn’t need to be a dreaded diagnosis with our ASE-certified mechanics taking care of you!
