There's nothing more important than being confident that you are getting qualified, honest service when you are looking at auto repair. But maybe you are looking for a new repair shop, or you are new to the area. How do you judge an auto repair shop before having gone to it?

The surest way to gain confidence in your auto repair experience is to ask around about shops in your area. Don't just go blindly into the place that is on your way to work, or down the street from your house. Where do your friends or co-workers go for their auto-repair? Many even find that a friend knows someone who is affiliated with a repair shop. Regardless, you are sure to hear plenty of opinions about where to go, and about who gives a fair deal for good service. People are generally spirited and more than willing to share their auto repair experiences; but do remember, bad experiences as a rule are more likely to spread than good ones.

If your social circle fails to yield any definite fruit, you can always check the internet. Look for auto repair shops in your area and what people have to say about their experiences there. A repair shop that operates poorly is sure to gain a reputation as doing so especially in the online world, where people are eager to share opinions. Though, again, beware: you can't trust every review. Keep in mind that people are more likely to give complaint than praise, and some reviews may even be altogether fake.

One last tip for having confidence in your auto repair is to educate yourself a little about what you think the problem might be. Again, you can use the internet to look up “symptoms” that your car is showing. It doesn't take much! Don't try to diagnose the problem yourself, but simply gain an idea of what the parts involved may be and what the mechanic is likely to be talking about, so that you can feel more comfortable in a conversation with him or her.
