Telltale Signs that Brake Replacement is in the Cards

They might be something that you don’t think about often, but your car’s brakes should always be kept in peak working condition. By looking and listening for certain symptoms, you may be able to establish if brake replacement is imminent.
Firstly, look at the brake pads to check for wear. You’ll see them through the gaps in the wheel spokes. The outside pad is pressed against the metal rotor. Typically, there should be at least a quarter of an inch of pad. If there is less, take your vehicle to a qualified technician and have the pads inspected.
When you apply your brakes, do you ever hear a high-pitched screaming sound? That noise comes from a steel shim (known as an indicator) and it gives an audible warning of possible brake replacement. The sound can be heard if the windows are up, but it might not be audible above an air conditioner or radio. However, you should always listen out for it. If it sounds regularly, make an appointment with a mechanic.
Growling or grinding: This loud metallic noise indicates that the brake pads have worn down completely and are probably beyond replacement. The growling or grinding is caused by the caliper and disc rubbing together which scratches or scores the rotors – creating a rough surface.
A pulsating or vibrating brake pedal may indicate warped rotors, but it is also a sign that the vehicle is out of alignment.
Keeping your brakes in good working order and properly calibrated can prevent costly brake replacement and, more importantly, help avoid an accident.
