With so many types of oil on the shelf in an auto shop or supply store, the question arises: does it really matter so much which kind you choose? In short, the answer is a strong, resounding yes. Oil types are selected by car makers with much consideration, and different types have different qualities. However, there are many myths that go along with the type of oil to use when having an oil change, such as using different oils depending on the outside temperature and the use of synthetic oil.
The most important thing to keep in mind is to follow the instructions in your owner's manual. Different types of automobile oils have different densities which make a huge difference when inside the engine of your car, mostly having to do with system pressure and lubrication. The specific type of oil that you are instructed to use has been chosen by the car company after much testing and research, and works with the specifications of that vehicle's engine.
One myth that pervades the world of the oil change is the use of different types of oil in the winter and summer. This is not necessary, and will likely do harm to your vehicle. When you see oil, for instance, 5W20, that means the oil has a viscosity (measure of liquidity) of 5 in cold weather and 20 in warm. The oil viscosity will change according to the outside and engine temperature, eliminating the need for the use of different oils. Keep that in mind next time you go for an oil change in the winter.
So what about synthetic oils? Again, check your owner's manual to make sure there are no restrictions about switching to synthetic oil in your next oil change. Generally, synthetic oil is a good choice as long as you use the correct viscosity, as it is more resistant to breakdowns under engine heat, pressure, and friction.
