New Guidelines for Oil Changes

As soon as you started learning a little bit about maintaining your own car, you learned that having regular oil changes is one of the best things that you can do to keep your car running smoothly. Changing the oil every 3,000 miles used to be the standard advice no matter the vehicle or how you drove it, but nowadays with different cars and smarter engines, oil change regulations and recommendations are different. At Country Town Tire & Auto Service Center, we want to help our customers get their oil change done on a timeline that is good for them and their cars. So, what are some of the new recommendations? Let’s take a look.
First, remember that oil changes are different. Your older car might still need regular oil changes every 3,000 miles, especially if your driving conditions are particularly rough. Rough driving includes a lot of stop and go driving, vehicles that tow consistently, if you usually drive on trips that are less than 5 miles, and extreme weather climates. Newer cars, on the other hand, can often go 7,500 miles between regular oil changes, longer if your car takes synthetic oils.
Second, remember that oil is different. There are different grades and formulas now, many of them specific to a type of engine. If you have a newer vehicle, the chances that your car will require a certain variety of oil is high and should be honored.
Finally, remember that while oil changes might be less frequent, that doesn’t mean you can ignore your engine and assume everything is fine. Check your oil in between changes and take it in if the oil is low or dirty.
