All vehicles will require regular maintenance and repairs over time. It is your responsibility as an owner to have your vehicle properly serviced and maintained to keep it in good condition and to prolong its life.
The brakes play a vital role in the safe running of a car and should therefore be checked regularly. Recognizing even the simplest problem with your brakes will not only save you a potentially large expense, but can also save your life.
Here are two major warning signs that should be taken seriously:
- When you apply the brakes and the pedal feels heavy, this could indicate a problem with the brake linings.
- The pedal sinks to the floor while the vehicle is stationary, or you have to pump the brakes in order to bring the vehicle to a halt while driving.
Brake fluid is pumped to the wheel cylinder by the master cylinder when you push down on the brake pedal. It is vital to check the level of your car’s brake fluid. Every 25,000 miles, it should be drained and replaced by a mechanic.
Most new cars are fitted with an ABS (anti-lock braking system) that prevents the tires skidding when you brake too hard. Even though they are fitted with warning systems, these have been known to fail – meaning you might not be aware that your brakes are not functioning correctly.
It’s also important to check for tire wear. If your tires are worn, this will cause your brakes to be ineffective and can lead to skidding and sliding.
