If Your Treads Fail the Penny Test, Visit One of Your Local Tire Stores

If you think you need to start making price comparisons at tire stores because your treads are wearing thin, the first thing to do is the “penny test.” Take a penny and insert the top of President Lincoln’s head into the tire tread. If the tread covers his head, the tire is fine. If it doesn’t, the tire is no longer safe. Time to head over to your local tire store.
Insert the penny every 12 inches around the tire, testing the inner, middle and outside portions of the tread. If your vehicle has an alignment problem, this can cause the tires to wear unevenly. Therefore, it’s important to establish if some areas are wearing quicker than others. Uneven wear dramatically reduces the lifespan of a tire.
Bubbles and Cracks
Bubbles and/or deep cracks on the sidewall or tread can signify that a tire might be destined to fail. Minor cracking is not always serious, because a tire is made of several layers, but any degree of deterioration should be taken seriously.
Tire Expiration
You may not know it, but tires sort of have an expiration date. The words “sort of” are used because the exact expiration date remains a controversial topic. In the US, tire companies say that 10 years is considered to be a reasonable lifespan for a tire. The issue is not so much that people use tires for longer than 10 years – but because they often buy tires that are already several years old to start with.
