How to Prevent Squeaky Windshield Wiper Blades

Squeaky windshield wiper blades are not only annoying, but they can distract you while driving. While there’s no right way to fix the problem (apart from replacement), here are some methods to prevent them from squeaking.
- Regularly replace the blade refills. These are relatively inexpensive, so, if possible, get good ones. They should be replaced before the rainy season, once a year.
- Refill the wiper fluid. Wipers tend to ‘skip’ when the windshield isn’t wet enough, so top up the fluid level if necessary.
- Make the wipers softer – Method 1: Use WD40 – yes, America’s famous blue and yellow bottle! Put some on a paper towel and wipe the windshield wiper blades. Take care, however, because petroleum-based products like this can erode the rubber, leaving it brittle and dry, and eventually it will crumble.
- Make the wipers softer – Method 2: Use rubbing alcohol – it won’t ruin or rot the blades. Dampen a paper towel with the alcohol and wipe the blades. It will clean off oil and dirt. Repeat until all the grime has been removed.
- Check if the windshield wiper blades, or the assemblies underneath them, are too tight or too loose. Too much, or too little, tension between the wiper and the glass can cause squeaking.
