Most people would never cut corners on getting the oil in their vehicle changed per the manufacturer’s recommendation, yet many fail to consider that there are other maintenance issues that should also be done regularly. Not only does your vehicle require clean oil to operate properly, but it also needs the cooling system to be in top operating condition. A radiator flush, also called a coolant flush, is an important part of avoiding an overheated engine. Here are some tips for telling whether your vehicle is due for a radiator flush:

- Mileage – If you have driven more than 30,000 miles since your last radiator flush, it is time to have it done even if you do not notice any symptoms of a problem. You wouldn’t wait to change the oil until your engine seized, so don’t wait till you are on the side of the road with smoke coming from under the hood to take care of your vehicle’s cooling system. Time is also a factor so if it has been five years, regardless of the miles driven, it is also time for a radiator flush.
- Temperature Gauge – If you notice the temperature gauge moving drastically from normal to hot, this is a symptom that you need to get the radiator flush done sooner rather than later.
- Puddles Under the Car – Other than drips from the air conditioner, you should never see puddles under your car. If you notice antifreeze or coolant puddling, get to a garage quickly as you definitely have a problem that may take more than a radiator flush to resolve.
- Weird Smells and Sounds – An engine in heat distress can often make odd noises, particularly a grinding noise, and/or put off a bad odor that is similar to a steam or syrupy scent. If someone mentions that your vehicle “smells hot,” it is a good time to get a radiator flush.
Since it really isn’t good for your car’s engine to wait until you experience these symptoms, here at Country Town Tire & Auto Service Center, we recommend you have us perform a radiator flush on your vehicle based on time or mileage as noted above. If you aren’t sure about whether it is due, we can test your coolant to see if it is dirty. In fact, we’re happy to do that during your regular oil change if you’d like.
