How to Choose Between Car Repairs and Buying a New Car

If you are facing a large bill for car repairs or have just gotten tired of one repair after another, you may be reaching the point that the idea of buying a new car is very appealing. However, have you really thought this out? Looking at all the perspectives is important if you do not want to make a decision based on just emotion.
- Budget – While your budget may take a hit for that $500 or even $2,000 of car repairs, wouldn’t a car payment be just as bad, but go on for 4, 5, or even 6 years? Even if you are accustomed to having a car payment, with the increased cost of vehicles, it is rather unlikely that you won’t end up with a payment that is considerably higher than what you have now. If your budget can sustain that, then fine, but be sure you have a set figure in mind before you head down to the dealership. Oh, and don’t forget to check with your insurance company because a newer vehicle could cost you a higher premium, as well.
- Warranty – Often it is tempting to go for a new vehicle because of the 3-year or longer warranty, but keep in mind that many car repairs are also warrantied, so once they are done, you won’t have to worry about them again for some time. Most vehicles are only covered for 36,000 miles, which many drivers exhaust much quicker than three years, particularly if you have a long commute to work or school.
