Many people have had it trained into their head that an oil change needs to happen every 3,000 miles. This may be true for your car, or it may not. Every car is different. Here are some tips when deciding when to change your oil.
- Check your manual to see what your car needs.
- At 3,000 miles the additives may be depleting, but the oil itself will still lubricate. You can possibly go longer than 3,000 miles, which is better for the environment, but you may risk the life of your engine in the long run.
- Many vehicles now have a “maintenance required” light that will come on at the time your car needs an oil change. Note that this light is set to trigger after so many miles from your last oil change. Commonly it is at 5,000 miles, but this does not mean you have to change your oil at this point-- it is just recommended.
- Many of the newer vehicles are made to function on oil changes of every 10,000 miles, or every six months.
- With some of the highbred brands or economy cars, it is recommended to change the oil once every year.

Getting the oil changed when needed, cleaning and getting new filters as recommended, and keeping current on your tuneups will keep your car functioning properly and prolong the life of your vehicle.
