The recommended interval for an oil change for most late-model vehicles is approximately once every three to six months (depending on how much the car is driven), or every 3,000 miles.
If you read your owner’s manual maintenance section, you’ll find that many extended oil change intervals (beyond 5,000 miles) are for vehicles that are driven under normal driving conditions. What we perceive as normal driving is actually "severe service" driving, as far as oil goes.
Severe service driving includes:
These types of driving conditions require an oil change every 3,000 miles. Older cars with high mileage (over 100,000 miles) are likely to require more frequent oil changes.
In a survey, most auto technicians said they believed American car owners delayed routine maintenance like oil changes, and that this procrastination cost the owner far more money in the end. Poor vehicle maintenance can lead to major engine damage.
Never ignore your vehicle’s oil-change light. A good way to find out how often your car needs an oil change is to have the oil analyzed at intervals of 3,000 miles. It should only take an auto technician a few minutes to check, and it won’t cost much.
