Heat is the worst enemy of tires. The hotter they get, the more likely they are to fail. Hot weather affects tires much more than cold weather because, in heat, they build up pressure and overheat much faster. This can cause a blowout. All drivers should be aware of how hot temperatures affect their tires, especially during summertime.
Frequent braking, excessive cornering and high-speed driving are all more dangerous when traveling in high temperatures. The tires can heat up beyond their scope of tolerance and simply blowout.
In hot weather, road temperatures soar, so it’s important to check your air pressure regularly. Make sure the tires are inflated according to the manufacturer’s specifications – you’ll find this information in the owner’s manual. An underinflated tire runs hotter than one that’s inflated correctly. Heat can quickly damage an underinflated tire and, once again, a blowout could occur.
What You Can Do
Remember, different tires have different ratings for load capability, tread wear and speed. The temperature grading represents a tire’s resistance to heat, as well as its ability to dissipate heat. That’s why it’s essential to seek advice from a reputable tire dealer about the conditions you drive in, how you drive, and how much load demand is placed on your vehicle.
