The automotive industry has come a long way since the introduction of the Ford Model T just over a century ago. The Model T was the first car that was relatively affordable for the common market, thanks to innovations in marketing, such as the assembly line and interchangeable parts.

Just as the automobile has evolved in the past hundred years, the auto shop industry has had to adapt, as well. The auto industry has greatly benefited from progress in science and technology, more than arguably any other field in the world, except perhaps for a few areas, such as health and communication.

The transportation industry was much different back in the early days. Thanks to interchangeable parts, early repairs on the Model T simply required replacing out old or malfunctioning parts. In fact, some of these old Model T cars were used for parts to construct tractors, snow plows, and even motor boats. Imagine trying to re-purpose your Toyota Corolla to fix up a wood splitter or turn a generator!

Today, auto shops work with cars that are frequently built with comfort, performance, or luxury in mind. The auto shops not only deal with simple interchangeable parts, such as fenders or windshields, but they also have to deal with complex electrical systems involved in power locks and windows, stereo systems and alarm systems. Working in an auto shop requires mechanical experience but electrical skills as well.
