Car Care Tips for Older Cars

Just as we tend to need to give our bodies a little more attention as we grow older, so must we be a bit more diligent when we are coaxing more life out of an older car. If you have an older car, here are a few car care tips that just might make your car last beyond its traditional lifespan.
- Oil Changes – Now is not the time to stretch out the time between oil changes. Be sure you stay on schedule and inquire about specially-formulated oils for high-mileage vehicles that can help extend the life of the engine.
- Inspections – Many of the components in today’s vehicles are designed to last 100,000+ miles, so we often don’t think about having them inspected in those first years. However, these are exactly the things that will now start needing attention. Things such as brake pads, brake rotors, hoses, timing belts, CV joints, shocks and struts are all likely nearing their time for replacement in older cars.
- Keep an Eye Out for Leaks – Leaks will be a sign that gaskets and other parts are wearing out. Even if you can’t immediately get your vehicle in to be checked, be sure to keep the fluids up. It’s much cheaper to add transmission fluid than it is to purchase a new transmission.
