3 Quick Ways to Keep Your Brakes From Failing

Unlike a new paint job, fancy chrome wheels, or even simply a just-opened car freshener, your auto brakes don’t get nearly the appreciation they deserve. But when it comes to your own personal safety and the safety of others on the road, your brakes are arguably the most important part of your car.

Because of the frequent stopping and starting involved with driving, the brake pads will wear over time. This leads to an increased amount of time needed to stop and a higher risk of your brakes failing altogether. Here are three signs to look out for if you’re worried about your brakes failing:

1. Listen closely. Most likely, the car will produce an obnoxious squealing sound if they have worn out on you. Normally, you can hear this sound yourself if you listen closely, but other people outside your car may also be able to tip you off about any unusual sounds coming from your vehicle.
2. Check the dashboard for any warning lights. If you have any warning lights on at all, be sure you know what they mean! You can check this out in your car’s instruction manual. Though brakes work mechanically to stop the car, there are also electrical and wiring systems in play that could also affect your car’s performance.
3. Make sure the car is braking properly in low-stress situations. The best way to check your brakes, of course, is to put them to the test before you need them in an emergency situation. Find an open parking lot and quiet road where you can test your car’s responsiveness. If you notice a decreased ability to stop within a reasonable distance, have your brakes inspected immediately.
