Warning Signs That Brake Replacement May Be Necessary

For many vehicle owners, regular brake maintenance is often overlooked. Brakes are a vital part of every vehicle, and should always be in excellent condition. Take your car to an experienced mechanic the moment any of the following signs areevident:

• The brakes are not responding normally, or the brake pedal is almost reaching the floor. This could indicate a leak in the brake system. You may also find a small puddle of oily fluid in the space where you park your car at night.
• Your car pulls to one side when braking. This could mean that the linings need replacing. A grinding sound when applying the brakes may indicate the same problem. This is serious, and your mechanic will most likely tell you that the brake pads and rotors need replacing. At worst, the entire brake system might need to be replaced.

Buying cheap brake pads is a major reason for premature brake failure. The way a person drives also affects the effectiveness and lifespan of brakes. Constant sudden stopping and “riding the brakes” are bad driving habits. If you drive in heavy traffic that necessitates stopping and starting, your brakes will definitely wear out faster.

If you have your vehicle serviced regularly, you should be able to avoid the expense of total brake replacement. When you take your vehicle in for servicing, a complete inspection is performed. The oil is changed, the tires are rotated and the brakes are thoroughly checked for any signs of weakness.
